In the critical area of cancer care, healthcare providers are experiencing a growing pressure to improve patient safety and decrease operators’ risk, while at the same time working more efficiently and containing costs.
SafeChemo directly addresses these challenges.
The SafeChemo service automates cancer treatment from e-prescription to the automated preparation of cytostatics infusions, safely, accurately, efficiently and reliably. SafeChemo offers a set of modules, to increase patient safety, lower operators’ risk of contamination and reduce operating costs at the same time.

As for other European Hospital Pharmacies the production volume of ready to use cytotoxic preparations is increasing year by year. For 2007 we now expect to reach a number of 80.000 single doses .By implementing SafeChemo we do hope to solve the problems in increasing the number of staff and the hard work in the sterile areas. On the same time we have been tempted to join a pan European group for the evaluation of the automation of the process we run manually today!

SafeChemo gives a real opportunity to move cytotoxic compounding into the 21th century. Since hospital pharmacy began cytotoxic work in the 1980’s in the UK we have seen little development to help us deal with the increasing pressures arising from the successful development of new therapeutic approaches. SafeChemo is an exciting and novel solution for us to be working in a partnership to develop!

The core of the SafeChemo project is based on a technology which was prototyped at our hospital. We were the first to believe that this is the future of cytotoxic compounding and I am very excited to see it happening!
